Remember when? Is often a highly open question. Remember when things used to be...? brings you to a far off place that no longer exists but in your mind. These questions need to be asked about music! Remember when music was good? Remember when Music used to mean something? Both viable questions these days.
In my opinion which is so often revered, is that we have a couple handfuls of singers with a passion for singing. The music to them is what matters, what they put out is often gone over and over, Because they want us as listeners to feel what they felt writing it and singing it. That's what I miss from many artists. Remember Jagged Little Pill and Pieces of You from the nineties? Front to Back side to side perfectly written albums by who now are two iconic female artists. Nirvana, Aerosmith, Tom Petty, even Marilyn Manson's music meant something!
Today we have H-Monies and Wacka Jokas ft Sexy Sonja and Tina Twerker. I'm not saying Rap and R&B isn't music, it is, i feel that maybe it was taken too far out of the spectrum of what we like to call artistic integrity. It just isn't! The lyrics speak of expensive cars, fucking bitches, and doing drugs. At least Snoop Dogg and Dr.Dre had respect! Rolling down the street sipping gin and juice smoking blunts is a far cry from the raps of today!
Now don't misunderstand me, I am an equal opportunity hater/lover. Mariah Carey used to be a decent human and made music that said something. I love Janis Joplin so much that my child's name is Joplyn! Missy Elliot makes my body move in ways I didn't know possible! Tori Amos is in my soul to the day I die. Lady Gaga is one of the most inspirational artists of our (millennia) time. Nickelback makes me want to rip my ears out. Marilyn Manson's growl still gives me goosebumps, and Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus are my guilty pleasures!
Country music is something I can only take in strides, but you will catch me listening to Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, or Dolly and Reba. Even a skosh of Garth Brooks from time to time. It's just a lot of the same old story in a different time and place, its a bit depressing.
I will love Rock and Roll forever! I am however a Female Rocker Fan all day long and these days its few, good ones. Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless and Maria Brink of In this Moment in my opinion lead the forefront for woman in rock and metal music! They definitely do not get the credit that they well deserve!
The music industry is lacking these days, its putting out things merely for flash or money and the people are starting to notice. Vocal ability is something they have put to the side in this age of auto tune. Lady Gaga has vehemently scolded artists who lip sync to their tracks. If you are gonna be a musician of substance you need to be able to sing live! We have gotten so LAZY that we just let Brittney get away with it, while still making millions! It GROSS.
Adele, Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Lady Gaga, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars and other vocal artists are bringing music back to when we swayed and cried to it. Back when your jam came on you understood the words and your feet couldn't stop moving or head stop knocking!
